A Newcomer's Perspective - written by Sharolyn R. Meyer

"I was brought up to appreciate the little things that have no monetary importance.  Doing my part, to help others and make the world a better place, was instilled in me.  However, somewhere in my teen eye rolling years, I focused more on my immediate desires and less on caring about the concerns of others in need or how to make their life better.

I have to be equally honest in admitting that I continued to have that egotistical view in some of my adult years.  Don’t get me wrong:  I did the customary, feel like I’m doing my part contributions, such as putting money in the Salvation Army bucket at Christmas time or taking my clothes and items to Goodwill.  The point is:  I thought I was doing my part to help in a small way, but that was just the tip of the iceberg and not reality at all.

I did not learn what it meant to truly give and be involved, until I accepted a position with the Arc of Bay County.  I learned so much in the time I have been here and it has awakened the desire in me to do so much more.  When I see the faces of the people who depend on the Arc and it’s members to do the right thing by them, I realize how much we take for granted and how little we really need to do to make the world a better place for everyone.

I know that we, as a society, have become very busy and don’t have time for much else.  However, consider this:  we can accomplish so much for such little effort by being involved, joining together and doing our small part.  Be a member, attend a meeting occasionally, be on our board and assist in making decisions, participate in our fund raisers or just give of yourself whatever and whenever you can.

So this heartfelt message and fervent wish is calling all people young and old, member or not, to experience the joy of making a difference in someone’s life.  I promise you the reward of a gentle grateful smile makes it all worthwhile."

Thank you, Sharolyn, for your inspiring insight.  The Arc of Bay County welcomes all newcomers to our chapter.  Whether you are near or far, you can help us in our mission to help all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Contact our office at 989-893-1346 or e-mail us at contact@arcbc.com and tell us you found The Arc of Bay County on the world wide web.
